Addiction Treatment For Teens

High-risk behaviors in teens are hardly new. Most parents can see that their teens almost seem hard-wired to experiment, explore, and push boundaries. But when these behaviors become dangerous, when teen exploration turns into substance use, many parents are left shaken.

When this substance use turns into addiction, most are left asking the question: How could this happen?

At BNI Treatment Centers, we specialize in working with teens. We know that nearly 1-in-5 teenagers use illicit drugs or prescription pills, and we make it our mission to ensure your teen is equipped with the skills and support they need to overcome any substance use or addiction.

What We Treat: Teen Addiction at BNI

What is it that makes teens so prone to risk taking and substance use disorders? Teens generally have underdeveloped executive functioning. They are still growing, and the part of the brain that controls reasoning, risk management, and impulse control still needs time to mature. This often leads to them being more willing to take risks. It’s important to find a recovery partner that not only understands this complex developmental stage, but has the expertise and knowledge to help.

Experience. Connect. Grow.

BNI Treatment offers your teen a path forward.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTHCARE FOR TEENS

Signs Adolescents May Be Abusing Drugs

It can be challenging to determine if your child may be using drugs, as many of the signs can also be attributed to normal adolescent behavior or struggles with mental health. However, if you suspect your child may be using drugs, paying attention to their behavior and looking for warning signs is essential.

  • Bloodshot or glazed eyes
  • Dilated or constricted pupils
  • Sudden weight loss or gain
  • Poor personal hygiene and grooming
  • Unexplained mood swings
  • Increased irritability, agitation, or anxiety
  • A sudden drop in academic performance or interest in school
  • Frequent unexplained absences or tardiness
  • Changes in social circles, friends, or activities
  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyed hobbies or sports
  • Increased secrecy or withdrawal from family and friends
  • Lying or being dishonest about their whereabouts
  • Defensiveness or hostility when questioned about their behavior
  • Changes in sleeping patterns (insomnia or excessive sleep)
  • Decreased motivation or enthusiasm for life
  • Frequent sniffing or runny nose (for drugs like cocaine or meth)
  • Frequent coughing or hacking (for drugs like marijuana or tobacco)
  • Needle marks, track marks, or bruising (for injected drugs)
  • Unexplained nausea or vomiting
  • Unusual odors on clothing or breath
  • Frequent requests for money
  • Missing money or valuables from the household
  • Selling personal belongings to gain money

The presence of drug-related items can be a clear indicator, such as:

    • Pipes, bongs, or rolling papers
    • Needles or syringes
    • Small plastic bags or pill bottles
    • Burnt spoons or aluminum foil

Sudden health issues or complications may be related to drug use. These could include respiratory problems, frequent infections, or unexplained physical symptoms.

Types of Treatment

Teen Treatment Programs Acute Stabilization

Acute stabilization services are beneficial when a teen experiences a sudden psychiatric or drug-related crisis that can significantly impair function or even be life-threatening. Acute stabilization involves integrated medical and psychiatric interventions provided in a medical environment on a short-term basis that are adjusted to the level of the specific emergency—mild, moderate, or severe.

BNI Treatment Centers has a comprehensive acute stabilization unit for teens.

How We Treat Teen Addiction at BNI

At BNI, we are proud to specialize in teen mental health and addiction treatment. This makes us uniquely equipped to handle the challenges your teen faces. When teens get treatment with us, they do so alongside peers in their own age group, and our compassionate staff are here to guide them through their recovery journey.

Our psychiatrist-led teams work with your teen to build a tailored treatment program, using evidence-based approaches like cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical-behavioral therapy, and many others. This is combined with our 24/7 nursing staff and world-class facilities to give your teen a safe and effective path toward recovery.

What We Offer

At BNI, we offer a wide variety of science-backed approaches to ensure our clients have a proven and direct route toward reclaiming their future. Importantly, your teen’s specific treatment will depend on their unique situation, with our psychiatrists working closely with them to take a holistic and individualized approach, ensuring the best outcomes possible.

We understand the impact that recovery can have on your teen’s education. That’s why during treatment, we provide on-site tutors and access to computers and the internet. This enables our clients to stay engaged in their studies, going through treatment without falling behind in school. Recovery is about getting their life back, not putting it on hold.

If your teen experiences a sudden psychiatric or drug-related crisis, this can be dangerous to their mental or physical well-being. With acute stabilization, our psychiatrists and nursing staff provide the medical or psychiatric interventions needed based on the level of the emergency. After the crisis is over, we work with you and your teen to evaluate what further treatment is necessary.

Many substances cause powerful withdrawal symptoms, and some of these may even be life-threatening. We strongly encourage any teen going through withdrawal to do so under medical supervision. Our medical detox program provides a safe environment for your teen to begin the recovery process, with nurses and psychiatrists involved every step of the way to provide the medication and care your teen needs.

Addiction and mental health disorders often go hand-in-hand – when this happens, it’s known as “dual diagnosis”. This situation can complicate the recovery process, with each condition fueling the other, and traditional treatment options lose their effectiveness. At BNI, our psychiatrists specialize in treating both your teen’s underlying mental health condition and their substance use disorder.

Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) provides the most flexibility, while still maintaining a structured and comprehensive treatment approach. Each week, your teen will have at least one individual therapy session and one therapy family session. Additional group therapy may be a part of their treatment plan.

Our partial hospitalization program (PHP) enables your teen to get the treatment they need during the day, but still go home each night. In this intensive program, they will stay at our facility for 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. Our on-site tutors work with their school to make sure they don’t fall behind in class, while our psychiatrists and staff ensure your teen has a recovery plan suited to their specific needs.

Our residential inpatient care is an intensive and 24/7 treatment program. Here, your teen gets the support they need away from their usual distractions. This can cover a huge array of treatments and protocols, so please check out our webpage for more details.

After any treatment program, a variety of follow-ups are scheduled to ensure your teen stays on track. Our goal is not only to help your teen get back on track, but to make sure they have the tools and support to stay there.
