Learn about teen recovery centers for inpatient mental health treatment.

When a teen appears to have a mental health challenge it can really cause parents to worry. Parents feel somewhat helpless when they witness their son or daughter struggling daily, but are at a loss to help them. As symptoms become more severe, despite the efforts of a local doctor or therapist, parents may become frantic.

Teens with worsening mental health are able to get the more intensive help they need through an inpatient mental health program. These teen recovery centers provide a much more tailored treatment approach, as well as tutors to help guide their schoolwork. To learn all about teen mental health programs, keep reading.

About Inpatient Teen Recovery Centers

The teen years are complex and angst ridden. When your teen’s actions or mood states become troubling, it is easy to chalk it up as normal teenage turmoil. You may have the teen seen by a doctor, just to make sure there isn’t a health issue behind it all. Once that is off the table, the doctor may refer your teen to a therapist.

Even while under the care of a mental health provider, though, your teen’s mental state may still be getting worse. They may be deeply depressed and even be having suicidal thoughts. While this is cause for alarm, parents do have another treatment option to consider.

A mental health program designed for teens provides a safe, supportive place for the teen to really focus on getting better. The teen will live on campus, giving them a chance to avoid the daily triggers that may be factors in their mental health condition. Within the safe, caring inpatient setting, a teen can receive tailored treatment while being closely observed.

Upon intake the teen will engage with a clinician for an interview, and other types of assessment tools. Once a diagnosis is made, the team will design a treatment plan that is customized for the teens’ unique needs.

Teen mental health centers use a variety of treatment measures to help bring about positive change. These include one-on-one therapy, group therapy, holistic methods, and experiential therapy. All the while, the teen will receive academic support so they can keep up with their schoolwork.

When is a Teen Recovery Program Needed?

How is a parent supposed to know when their child needs a higher level of care? What are the signs and symptoms of a mental health crisis? These questions are hard to answer without the input of a mental health expert. To start, though, a doctor can review the teen’s symptoms and then make a recommendation for mental health care.

Some of the signs a teen is in crisis might include:

  • Emotional detachment.
  • Isolates from others.
  • Has excessive fear.
  • Sudden weight loss or gain.
  • Nightmares and sleep problems.
  • Impaired daily function.
  • Extreme mood swings.
  • Aggressive or violent actions.
  • Substance abuse.
  • High-risk behaviors.
  • Self-harm
  • Paranoia
  • Hallucinations
  • Delusions
  • Discussing or attempting suicide.

Based on how many of these warning signs are present, the doctor may refer the teen to an inpatient program for a higher level of care.

What Conditions Does a Teen Recovery Center Treat?

When a teen is in need of a more intensive approach to mental health treatment, an inpatient program is the correct level of care. These programs are equipped to manage a full range of mental health disorders. Here are some of the most common teen mental health disorders treated at a teen treatment center:

Depression:

Teen depression often first presents as a loss of interest in the things they’d once enjoyed. The teen might begin to avoid people and social events. Other symptoms of depression include:

  • A state of sadness and despair.
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Changes in appetite.
  • Changes in sleep habits.
  • Trouble concentrating.
  • Angry outbursts.
  • Self-harm
  • Feelings of shame or guilt.
  • Thoughts of suicide.

Anxiety.

Teen anxiety features irrational fear and worry that impacts their daily to function. Social anxiety is a common type of anxiety in teens. Common symptoms of anxiety might include:

    • Fear of being judged or made fun of among peers.
    • Racing heart.
    • Sweating
    • Sleep problems.
    •  Mood swings.
    • Irritability
    • Self-doubt
    • Restless
    • Angry outbursts.
    • Avoids friends and family.
    • Excess worry.
    • Frequent headaches or stomach problems.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Teens who suffer from OCD have obsessive thoughts combined with compulsive acts. Common OCD symptoms involve obsessive fears about germs or injury combined with rituals that help them manage the anxiety.
  • Borderline Personality Disorder. Teens with BPD struggle socially. The disorder disrupts the ability to make and maintain lasting friendships. Teens with BPD may have frequent emotional outbursts and mood swings.
  • Bipolar Disorder. Teens with bipolar have frequent and extreme shifts in mood, from the depths of despair to mania. Bipolar disorder can lead to substance abuse and other high-risk behaviors.
  • Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Teens with ODD object to authority figures. This presents with chronic aggression, angry outbursts, failure to abide by rules, being easily annoyed, and blaming others for mistakes.
  • Dual Diagnosis. Teens who have both a mental health challenge plus are involved in substance abuse have what is termed dual diagnosis. Some teen centers offer treatment for these co-occurring disorders.

Parents who feel they can no longer help their teen will benefit from experts in the field of mental health. When seeking help for your child, a residential teen recovery center is a good option for youth with declining mental health.
