BNI Treatment Centers: Leading Teenage Substance Abuse Treatment

Understanding Teen Risk Behaviors

High-risk behaviors among teens are hardly new. Teens seem to be hard-wired to experiment with substances and other risky behaviors, possibly due to an undeveloped executive brain functioning. This undeveloped area of the brain is associated with reasoning, processing risks, decision-making, and impulse control. With this part of their brain still maturing, teens may be more prone to risks, such as abusing drugs and alcohol. When it becomes apparent that a teenager is engaging in substance abuse, seeking an adolescent rehab California program that addresses teen-specific addictive behaviors becomes crucial.

Detox and Stabilization in Treatment

The priority in treatment is to determine if the teen needs to undergo a medical detox or acute stabilization. Medical detox involves ridding the body of the toxins associated with the substance of abuse under expert supervision. During detox, the teen is closely monitored, with medications provided to alleviate withdrawal symptoms. After detox, the teen can fully engage in treatment.

Holistic Approach in Adolescent Rehab

An effective adolescent rehab program understands the necessity of pinpointing the sources of emotional pain driving the substance abuse. This involves focused individual and group therapy, especially cognitive behavioral therapy. Such therapies empower teens with coping tools for stressors or triggers that previously led to substance use.

Considering the significant role of family in a teen’s life, family therapy becomes vital in a teen treatment program. Family therapy offers a safe space for members to express emotions, from frustrations to fears. It’s also a platform to learn new communication techniques, enhancing the home environment and fostering improved family ties.

With a comprehensive understanding of teen stressors and their developing brains, expert staff at a teen treatment center can tailor a program to meet the adolescent’s specific needs, promoting lasting recovery and growth.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTHCARE FOR TEENS

Signs Adolescents May Be Abusing Drugs

It can be challenging to determine if your child may be using drugs, as many of the signs can also be attributed to normal adolescent behavior or struggles with mental health. However, if you suspect your child may be using drugs, paying attention to their behavior and looking for warning signs is essential.

  • Bloodshot or glazed eyes
  • Dilated or constricted pupils
  • Sudden weight loss or gain
  • Poor personal hygiene and grooming
  • Unexplained mood swings
  • Increased irritability, agitation, or anxiety
  • A sudden drop in academic performance or interest in school
  • Frequent unexplained absences or tardiness
  • Changes in social circles, friends, or activities
  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyed hobbies or sports
  • Increased secrecy or withdrawal from family and friends
  • Lying or being dishonest about their whereabouts
  • Defensiveness or hostility when questioned about their behavior
  • Changes in sleeping patterns (insomnia or excessive sleep)
  • Decreased motivation or enthusiasm for life
  • Frequent sniffing or runny nose (for drugs like cocaine or meth)
  • Frequent coughing or hacking (for drugs like marijuana or tobacco)
  • Needle marks, track marks, or bruising (for injected drugs)
  • Unexplained nausea or vomiting
  • Unusual odors on clothing or breath
  • Frequent requests for money
  • Missing money or valuables from the household
  • Selling personal belongings to gain money

The presence of drug-related items can be a clear indicator, such as:

    • Pipes, bongs, or rolling papers
    • Needles or syringes
    • Small plastic bags or pill bottles
    • Burnt spoons or aluminum foil

Sudden health issues or complications may be related to drug use. These could include respiratory problems, frequent infections, or unexplained physical symptoms.

Types of Treatment

Teen Treatment Programs Acute Stabilization

Acute stabilization services are beneficial when a teen experiences a sudden psychiatric or drug-related crisis that can significantly impair function or even be life-threatening. Acute stabilization involves integrated medical and psychiatric interventions provided in a medical environment on a short-term basis that are adjusted to the level of the specific emergency—mild, moderate, or severe.

BNI Treatment Centers has a comprehensive acute stabilization unit for teens.

Primary Mental Health

A teen struggling with a mental health condition can profoundly impact all aspects of their lives. Getting professional treatment for an adolescent experiencing mood disorders or psychiatric distress is imperative to restore healthy functioning. Residential treatment allows the time and space for real change to occur within a safe and supportive treatment environment.

Types of Treatment

Dual Diagnosis

When a teen struggles with both a substance use disorder (SUD) and a co-occurring mental health disorder it is termed Dual Diagnosis. Both disorders must be treated in a coordinated manner for a successful recovery outcome. A skilled psychotherapist can guide the teen towards exploring underlying emotional pain to help understand the contributing factors toward both the SUD and the accompanying depression, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, PTSD, or other mental health disorders. An effective, individualized treatment plan can be developed only by examining the whole psychological picture.

    On-Site Academic Support

While seeking treatment is the top priority, it is also essential that an extended absence from school does not negatively impact the teen’s academic progress. During the residential treatment period, the adolescents will continue to engage in their studies with the assistance of the BNI case management and treatment team, coordinating with the school representatives and parents. During treatment, the student may require additional assistance with their schoolwork. To aid with this, BNI Treatment Centers provides on-site tutors and computer stations for the teen’s school use while in treatment.
