Over 3% of children ages 3-17 have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to 2022 data. That’s approximately 1 in 34 youth with ASD. About 41% of young people with ASD have an average or above-average IQ and are considered high-functioning.

“High-functioning” doesn’t mean matters are easy. ASD is still a condition that presents additional obstacles and complicates adolescents’ lives.

While ASD is not a condition to “cure,” it’s still possible to improve your teen’s situation. There are plenty of skills and strategies they can learn to better manage the difficult aspects of their autism. We offer high-functioning autism treatment for adolescents at BNI Treatment Centers, and we can help.

Experience. Connect. Grow.

BNI Treatment offers your teen a path forward.

Parent & Family Support

At our mental health treatment center for teens, we understand how difficult this time is for the parents and families of a struggling teen. Our therapeutic and clinical team will provide therapeutic support and guidance for the family unit during the entire process.

What We Treat: High-Functioning Autism

Without treatment, teens with ASD will do their best to adjust to the world around them. They try to learn social cues and act the way a person without their condition would. They learn to deal with their light and sound sensitivity, even if it means avoiding crowds or going outside on particularly sunny days.

They might become extremely anxious when their routine is broken, and hyperfocus on certain areas that interest them, ignoring everything outside of it.

While there is no medical diagnosis that will label someone with “high-functioning” autism, it is a term often used to describe someone who isn’t as noticeably autistic, or who has lower support needs.

Adolescents with high-functioning autism will figure out how to “function” in the best way they can, even if it exhausts them. However, there’s more to life than just functioning.

BNI Treatment Centers can help your teen with high-functioning autism live their best life.

How We Treat: What to Expect From Teen Autism Treatment at BNI Treatment Centers

The core of our treatment for high-functioning autism is talk therapy. We primarily utilize cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT).

CBT will help your teen recognize when their thoughts and their patterns are harmful. Then, they’ll learn to restructure those thoughts into something more positive and productive, changing their behavior for the better. It will also teach them strategies for social interactions, managing anxiety, and responding rationally to overstimulation.

DBT focuses more on the emotional aspects of high-functioning autism. It will help your teen better understand their emotions, and identify how they’re feeling so they can respond appropriately. It also builds communication skills and teaches proper ways to cope with the emotional ups and downs that can come with this condition.

Research indicates that 70% to 95% of youth with autism also have an additional psychiatric diagnosis. At BNI Treatment Centers, we will treat every aspect of your teen’s mental health. Psychiatrists are closely involved with every adolescent’s personalized treatment plan. This ensures they’re properly diagnosed and have an expertly crafted roadmap to a better quality of life. It also allows for the prescription of medications if the situation warrants it.

What to Know About Teens and High-Functioning Autism

Autism doesn’t get worse with time, so your teen’s condition becoming more severe isn’t a concern. However, autism greatly impacts the lives of adolescents, even if they’re high-functioning. The earlier they receive treatment, the better. It will empower them to build healthy relationships sooner, understand themselves earlier, and find ways to manage areas of life they find challenging before adulthood.

That can make a significant difference. An estimated 85% of autistic individuals in the US are unemployed. Mental health treatment can impact that statistic for the better, for your child and others with high-functioning autism. Only two-thirds of children with autism received some form of treatment, and not all of that treatment is effective. Research also indicates the older children get, the less likely they are to receive any kind of treatment.

BNI Treatment Centers believes high-functioning autism treatment during the teenage years is invaluable. This age group is eager to learn more about the world and how to thrive in adulthood. Every teen deserves the opportunity to overcome the obstacles high-functioning autism creates for them. While life will always be a little harder for them than most, treatment levels the playing field and offers autistic teens more power and control over their condition. It empowers them to live life to the fullest.
