When a teen is struggling with a mental health condition it can profoundly impact all aspects of their lives. This can be evident in a decline in academic performance, persistent difficulties with social relationships, stress within the family dynamic, and negative changes in various behaviors and habits. Getting professional treatment for an adolescent experiencing mood disorders or psychiatric distress is imperative in order to restore healthy functioning.
To effectively treat a teen who is exhibiting signs and symptoms of a mental health disorder there must first be a thorough physical and psychiatric evaluation conducted. The physical exam will rule out a possible health condition that might be contributing to the symptoms. The psychiatric evaluation will encompass a comprehensive list of factors, as well as consider any history of mental health conditions and treatment received. Based on the results of the intake interview and health assessments a treatment plan will be designed to align with the needs of the teen at their particular stage of emotional development.
A psychiatrist will engage the teen by interviewing him or her about current emotional issues and the presenting symptoms to gain some insights about what might be going on. The psychological evaluation involves an interview with the teen, an interview with the parents, a review of any mental health history, and the use of psychological assessment tools. Once the diagnosis is arrived at, the teen will be provided with a treatment plan. This will likely be a combination of psychotherapy and medication, depending on the diagnosis.
Sometimes the teen’s mental health status will deteriorate, regardless of outpatient interventions. This indicates the need for a more targeted treatment protocol such as is available at a residential mental health program for teens. The residential setting offers an excellent opportunity for the teen to concentrate on getting well, while also being tutored by an in-house academic liaison. This allows for an extended stay at the center while limiting the impact to the teen’s academic standing.
Teen Residential Treatment provides a customized approach, taking into account the unique features associated with the diagnosis, psycho-social issues, and selecting the right mix of treatment elements that are relevant to the teen. An effective teen treatment plan with be infused with both evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, solutions focused therapy, contingency management, mindfulness based cognitive therapy, and family-focused therapy, and the experiential offerings that can enhance the clinical effects overall.
Teen Treatment Programs
Acute Stabilization
When a teen experiences a sudden psychiatric or drug-related crisis that can bring about significant impairment in function, or even be life-threatening, acute stabilization services are required. Acute stabilization involves integrated medical and psychiatric interventions provided in a medical environment on a short-term basis that are adjusted to the level of the specific emergency—mild, moderate, or severe.
Primary Mental Health
When a teen is struggling with a mental health condition it can profoundly impact all aspects of their lives. Getting professional treatment for an adolescent experiencing mood disorders or psychiatric distress is imperative in order to restore healthy functioning. Residential treatment allows the time and space for real change to occur within a safe and supportive treatment environment.
Dual Diagnosis
When a teen struggles with both a substance use disorder (SUD) and a co-occurring mental health disorder it is termed Dual Diagnosis. Both disorders must be treated in a coordinated manner for a successful recovery outcome. A skilled psychotherapist can guide the teen towards exploring underlying emotional pain to help understand the contributing factors toward both the SUD and the accompanying depression, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, PTSD, or other mental health disorders. Only by examining the whole psychological picture can an effective, individualized treatment plan be developed.
On-Site Academic Support
While seeking treatment is the top priority, it is also important that an extended absence from school does not negatively impact the teen’s academic progress. During the residential treatment period, the adolescent will continue to engage in their studies with the assistance of the BNI case management and treatment team coordinating with the school representatives and parents. During treatment the student may require additional assistance with their schoolwork. To aid with this, BNI Treatment Centers provides on-site tutors as well as computer stations for the teen’s school use while in treatment.
