It is never a pleasant time for a parent to suspect their teen is using drugs, but for many, it is a constant worry. That concern is not unwarranted, with 50% of teens admitting to using an illegal drug, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. If it should become evident that your teen is abusing drugs, getting help for your child should not be delayed. Addiction and chemical dependency will develop as a result of continued substance abuse, leading to increased consumption of the substance. When the signs and symptoms are there that the teen is engaging in substance abuse, do not delay to intervene.
The first step teen treatment center would take in treatment for teen drug abuse is an interview with the teen to assess the substance abuse treatment needs, as well as evaluate whether a co-occurring mental health disorder is present. The teen’s physical and mental health history will be reviewed as part of the intake process as well. The treatment plan will be determined by these findings, as well as an interview with the teen’s parents. If the teen exhibits withdrawal symptoms when attempting to stop using the substance, they may need a medical detox before beginning addiction treatment. From these results, an individualized long-term treatment plan is created.
Some teens will benefit from a residential treatment program for their substance abuse disorder because they will receive a more intensive approach to treatment. The teen resides at the treatment center for an extended period during which he or she will engage in a full schedule of therapeutic activities daily. The treatment elements align with those listed for outpatient services, however a residential program provides 24-hour monitoring and support, and a more intensive level of care across the curriculum. Students will be provided tutoring while in the residential program, allowing them to continue to complete academic coursework while in treatment.
Teen Treatment Programs
When a teen experiences a sudden psychiatric or drug-related crisis that can bring about significant impairment in function, or even be life-threatening, acute stabilization services are required. Acute stabilization involves integrated medical and psychiatric interventions provided in a medical environment on a short-term basis that are adjusted to the level of the specific emergency—mild, moderate, or severe.
Primary Mental Health
When a teen is struggling with a mental health condition it can profoundly impact all aspects of their lives. Getting professional treatment for an adolescent experiencing mood disorders or psychiatric distress is imperative in order to restore healthy functioning. Residential treatment allows the time and space for real change to occur within a safe and supportive treatment environment.
When a teen struggles with both a substance use disorder (SUD) and a co-occurring mental health disorder it is termed Dual Diagnosis. Both disorders must be treated in a coordinated manner for a successful recovery outcome. A skilled psychotherapist can guide the teen towards exploring underlying emotional pain to help understand the contributing factors toward both the SUD and the accompanying depression, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, PTSD, or other mental health disorders. Only by examining the whole psychological picture can an effective, individualized treatment plan be developed.
On-Site Academic Support
While seeking treatment is the top priority, it is also important that an extended absence from school does not negatively impact the teen’s academic progress. During the residential treatment period, the adolescent will continue to engage in their studies with the assistance of the BNI case management and treatment team coordinating with the school representatives and parents. During treatment the student may require additional assistance with their schoolwork. To aid with this, BNI Treatment Centers provides on-site tutors as well as computer stations for the teen’s school use while in treatment.
